Oral treatment of pernicious anaemia: first fifty cases.

چکیده
From time to time in the past we have reported the results obtained from the oral treatment of pernicious anaemia with vitamin-B,,-peptide complexes (Heathcote and Mooney, 1958a, 1958b, 1962 ; Mooney and Heathcote, 1960, 1961a, 1963). We have now reviewed the first 50 unselected patients, who have been on this form of treatment for periods ranging from one to seven years, and the findings form the basis of this communication. The theory upon which the treatment is based has been fully described in our previous communications.

Transfusion of Human Blood in the Treatment of Pernicious Anæmia
Mr President and Gentlemen,?I do not intend in this paper to attempt any serious discussion as to the pathology of pernicious anaemia, nor shall I spend time in endeavouring to 'prove that all the cases which I shall bring forward were incontestable examples of that disease. I believe, however, that the following five cases? in which nine transfusions have been performed?were cases of perniciou...
متن کاملDetection of latent pernicious anaemia in iron-deficiency anaemia.
It has long been recognized that iron-deficiency anaemia and pernicious anaemia may occur in members of the same family (Faber and Gram, 1924 ; Maclachlan and Kline, 1926 ; Witts, 1930; Kaufmann and Thiessen, 1939). There are also numerous reports of pernicious anaemia developing in patients with a previous history of iron-deficiency anaemia (Callender and Denborough, 1957). More recently, in a...
متن کاملProteolysed Liver Extract in the Treatment of Tropical Macrocytic Anæmia
The discovery of Minot and Murphy (1926) of the curative value of mammalian liver in pernicious anaemia led to investigations into the nature of substance or substances present in the liver which are responsible for its haemopoietic activity. Cohn and his associates (1928) were pioneers in the preparation of potent extracts from mammalian livers, at first for oral use and later for parenteral u...
متن کاملPost-cricoid carcinoma in patients with pernicious anaemia.
Post-cricoid carcinoma occurs mainly in women and is often associated with a history of iron-deficiency anaemia. In some cases dysphagia has been present for many years. An association of this type of cancer with pernicious anaemia is not generally recognized. A recent study of 93 cases of post-cricoid carcinoma (Jacobs, 1961a) showed that 29 had suffered from iron-deficiency anaemia and that f...
متن کاملThe Reticulocyte Crisis after the Effective Specific Treatment of Pernicious Anaemia.
Since liver extracts began to be used in the treatment of pernicious anaemia animated discussion has been carried on with regard to the cause of the reticulocyte crisis that then occurs. The phenomenon is by no means easy to explain, and at first sight it would seem absurd that following effective treatment of pernicious anaemia only a sudden, transient increase in the reticulocytes can be obta...
